iGenics Ingredients: What’s in the Formula?

ScienceGenics currently describes iGenics as a 12-nutrient formula and highlights six AREDS2-associated nutrients: lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, vitamin C, copper and zinc.

AREDS2-related ingredients

Those six names overlap with the nutrients in the NEI AREDS2 formula. The clinically studied AREDS2 formula, however, is defined by exact amounts: vitamin C 500 mg, vitamin E 400 IU, copper 2 mg, zinc 80 mg, lutein 10 mg and zeaxanthin 2 mg.

Additional ingredients

The manufacturer also promotes ingredients including bilberry, ginkgo and turmeric; it states that turmeric is included at 350 mg per serving. We do not infer that these additions improve AMD outcomes merely because they appear alongside AREDS2-associated nutrients.

Why the label matters

A product can contain some or all AREDS2 nutrients while differing in dose or adding other ingredients. That is why the Supplement Facts panel should be compared directly with the studied formula before making an AREDS2-equivalence assumption.
